Student has displayed the ability to respect Brockle's boundaries (i.e. no turning into Doris), and understand simple requests (i.e. change form now/dont do that thing). This is something that only a being with some level of sapience could be capable of.

What's more, while Student can't create original words, they seem to use the words of others to form original intent and meaning. i.e. Sucre just said "Thanks for knocking them all out, good job! *thumbs up*". If Student was not a sentient being, they would've repeated that entire sentence verbatim, but Student ONLY repeated the last words and gesture, as if to reciprocate with Sucre. This clearly displays a mind, one that is capable of choice.

They might be unable to communicate with their own words, but it's very clear they are speaking in "soundboard", sort of like Bumblebee from transformers or the Kenku race in DnD. They are not mindlessly copying but display an intelligence and intent with what they choose to mimic and why.
