The trifold cult (can’t recall if they have an official name) may have made (i.e. sacrificed) Doris at the end of the world as we know it as a means of practical/ritualistic escapism, but instead accidentally made a god in control of a multiverse of their own, wherein they were all trapped in a world of plants that think they’re people.

See the non-good, pointedly-polite purple flowers’ description of graphite in “Toxic” for some semblance of validation for this theory.
